Persons with Disabilities and Political life

The history of parliamentarism in Serbia in the last decades did not meat persons with disabilities in the work of Republic Parliament.

These days we are weatneses of the new beginning in this area and starting of actively involvement of persons with disabilities in election process of some political parties.

Since 2000 persons with disabilities started to get involved in the work of local level governments and disability movement has the first representatives in Zrenjanin Kristina Zivankic and in Smederevo Dusko Savic. These changes were very important as a sign of turning the society towards new values.

Involvement within the modern European happenings, following the situation in the world scene and adoption of International Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities probably resulted in recognising the leaders of disability movement in Serbia as persons who could contribute in state policy with their experiences and place disability policy on higher level. That is the way to strengthen and enrich the disability movement too.

New history is much more ineresting as note for the first time two ladies - candidates for Republic Parliament – two recognised activists for the rights of persons with disabilities, Gordana Rajkov, as a non-party candidate on G17 Plus list and Milica Ruzicic-Novkovic, on LDP list.

No matter the final results of parliamentary elections this is for sure a great challenge and honour for all persons with disabilities in Serbia. We appeal to all persons with disabilities, their associates and friends to support these candidates no matter on their personal political inclinations as it is support to achievements of our common goals.

On these pages you coul be informed about the involvement of persons with disabilities in Parliamentary activities in other European countries. You could also follow the activities of our candidates in Serbia in forthcoming elections.

Give your comments and suggestions for their activities and we will send them to our candidates and with your permission put them on our web site.
